Mon Sep 19

The Delta State Government on Friday says it would soon embark on major reforms of the Administration of the Criminal Justice System aimed at upholding the rights of the people to speedy trials and expediting the dispensation of Justice in the State.

The State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr Peter Mrakpor made the disclosure while receiving the Executive Members of the Nigeria Bar Association, Agbor branch, led by its Chairman, Mr. A. O. Ewere who paid him a courtesy visit in his Chambers.

Barr Mrakpor who gave the indication that the State Government was set to domesticate the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 as part of reforms to address the current complex and slow Justice administration system in the State, said that with the domestication of the Act, the Criminal Procedural Code Law of Delta State will be automatically repealed. He said there is the urgent and compelling need to reform the administration of criminal justice in Delta State as the extant Criminal Procedure Law of Delta State has lost its capacity to respond quickly to the needs of the society, check the rising waves of crime, speedily bring criminals to book and protect the victims of crime.

Speaking further, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice explained that all other laws in respect to the Criminal Justice System in the State will be reviewed for the quick commencement and conclusion of all criminal trials within a reasonable time in fulfillment of the constitutional right of a Defendant to be tried within a reasonable time.

While lamenting on situations where some inmates have been in prison custody awaiting trials longer than necessary due to delay trials and the slow Justice delivery system, Barr. Mrakpor solicited the co-operation of the Bar in this all-important task of bringing about the much needed revolution in the criminal justice system in Delta State.

While thanking the group and the NBA in the State for their support, the Attorney-General who is the Official leader of the Bar in the State, assured the Agbor Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association and the various branches of the NBA across the State, of his continued support to them

Earlier, the Chairman of the Agbor branch of the NBA, A. O. Ewere, said they were in the Attorney-General's Chambers to congratulate him on his appointment and invite him to their 2016 Law Week scheduled for April 27 -29, 2016.
